Between Two Servers #9: Building an App and Taking it to Market

BTS Episode #9
Have you ever wondered how an app is built from inception to release? Well, wonder no more! Sonia Couto, Managing Director of Konverge and Christine Billinger, Design & Marketing Manager are here to talk through the process right here on Between Two Servers.
C: The most important thing, I think before you start any development or start raising any money is that you have to do some customer development. So, you have to find out who your customer is going to be. So, what I hear a lot from people is that ‘oh anybody can use my product’ or you know, ‘everybody will use it it’s for everybody’ and okay, it might be but you have to figure out who you’re going to sell it to because usually when you start up, you know you have a more limited budget, so you need to use that budget wisely.
So, you need to figure out who your perfect customer is. The perfect customer is someone who buys repeatedly, spreads the word of mouth about your product, they might even become evangelists, so that’s who you really want to target, and the only way to do that and the best way to do that is to do, you know, you really have to do a lot of leg work.
S: They need to take the time to understand their market, their business, before they even start spending any money.
C: Yeah, so it’s a huge risk because you know, you could build a product that nobody’s going to buy. That is a worst-case scenario, right? So, yeah, so I would say to that person, the enthusiasm is awesome, you need that because to get a product off the ground it’s a lot of work, it’s a lot of hustle, but I would tell them to find somebody who can like, mentor them. There’s all sorts of programs for entrepreneurs and startups and you know, they can get into those and they’re going to get all the resources that they’ll need to get started but yeah they’re going to need help!
